Affordable homes in DINAS MAWDDWY

Location: Dinas Mawddwy, Gwynedd

Number of homes: 3  bed terrace of 3

Developer:  Cymdeithas Tai Clwyd

Housing needs survey and public meetings were held with the Community Council and local residents in Dinas Mawddwy in 2005 – 2006. Gwynedd Housing and Snowdonia National Park Planning decided on the scheme on Forestry Commission owned land which was an exception site- (land outside the development boundary which was deemed suitable for affordable housing.) The survey showed a housing need for 15 – 20 locals. The houses were completed in 2009.

‘The scheme was the first development of affordable housing on an exception site on Forestry Commission land. The scheme was deemed by local people as an opportunity for them to stay in an area where house prices are high and new build affordable isn’t possible due to land prices, planning restrictions and lack of funding to make a scheme viable.

The houses are heated with air source heat pumps and the standard of insulation is high.  The houses are clad in wood and slate and are quite eye catching. The houses have now been let and the residents are happy with their new homes.’
